Twenty-six Lions, along with numerous guests, participated in the annual cookout and potluck event Tuesday, June 5, at the Calhan Fire Station. Mother Nature smiled on the gathering where there was lots of fabulous food and some fun games. The only business conducted was the announcement of the Kidspree date and location: Saturday, August 13, at the Chapel Hills Walmart. Save the date; we need all the volunteers we can muster for this important and rewarding activity. Other announcements included the name of the child Calhan Lions are sponsoring at Lions’ Camp this summer. She is Renae Vanasse, daughter of Scott and Carmen Vanasse, from Miami Yoder. And . . . Remember to keep July 23 open for work at the Demolition Derby, as well as the evenings of July 29 and 30 for the El Paso County Fair Dances. The July meeting will see installation of a new slate of officers, as well as induction of new members. The operator of bingo games at the Bingo Palace has seen fit to close down. He gave his tenants only twelve day’s notice, and with that generous amount of time, Lion Judy McGowan has been forced to seek out a new home for Lions’ Bingo. After a meeting with representatives from all participating Clubs, and ascertaining continued support, Lion Judy has been able to arrange for a new home which will assure minimal interruption of income to the Clubs. Lion Larry Doyle, new Bingo Coordinator (749-2723), and I, Lion Betty, attended the meeting, and took the liberty of assuring Lion Judy that Calhan Lions would support her decisions. On Sunday, June 12, Lions’ Bingo at the Bingo Palace ended with 166 players, one of whom won the progressive jackpot (more than $8,000), which had to be given away that day. After the game, ten Lions from various Clubs showed up to help move all of the supplies out of the building and into storage. Lion Judy has made the decision to relocate to Jackpot Bingo, 2417 N. Union Blvd., Union and Van Buren, beginning on July 5. The only days of the week available were Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. The “Door” and the “Pit” will require only four people each. Volunteers for the Door (Calhan Lions) will need to arrive by 5:00. Tentative dates, to be confirmed by Lion Larry Doyle, are: Tuesday, July 11, Tuesday, August 23, and Monday, September 5. The Door is located in the smoke free area of the (smaller) hall, so those volunteers for whom smoke is a problem will no longer have to contend with that, however, the ability to sit while working is in doubt. The accoutrements of the bingo operation will be somewhat more primitive, and will require us to rely less on electronic aids. Bingo; Easter Egg Hunt; Photo screener Kidsight program; Recycle used eyeglasses; Flag pins for 1st grade students; Rocky Mountain Eye Institute; Eyeglasses for school children; Lion’s camp workday; Handicap student at Lion’s camp; Hearing aids for school children; Support local chapters of Boy Scouts & Cub; Adopt a highway program (Fun run in the sun); Community Christmas Celebration; Loyalty Day Parade; Calhan School District Technology Committee; Scholarship Committee; El Paso County Fair Dance; El Paso County Fair Demolition Derby; Student of the month program; Dollar a month for Lion’s Camp;
